Relocating to a new place is a very important step for you and your family. It is not just more than moving your belongings, it includes a plethora of new things like a new house, neighbors, different surroundings, and also about organizing and planning your belongings at that new place.
Follow this moving checklist for a smooth seamless transition:
- First thing will be to start your preparations early prior 4-6 weeks before moving. So you are well organized during the moving day.
- Create a Central folder where you can keep a list of all your important documents (Quotes, Receipts). You can add sticky notes accordingly in the folder for easy recognition.
- You can make a checklist of items you wish to carry with yourself while relocating or you want to sell or donate it.
- Inform in advance to your regular service providers like newspaper, bill distributors & monthly or weekly periodicals about your change of address.
- If you are moving by yourself, make sure you purchase these essentials like moving boxes, packing tape, cutter, markers, packing paper, bubble wrap paper etc.
- If you are hiring a moving company, inquire with your removalist about moving what services they provide in their quote i.e. from packing, loading, storage, unpacking etc. You can ask for an online estimate from moving company & get a brief idea about their charges & what services they are providing.
- Make use of boxes to carry lighter items (Soft toys, linens). Do check once whether boxes securely packed with tapes.
- The fridge should be cleaned and kept empty to avoid mould or any bad odours before moving.
- Mirrors, glass equipment should be wrapped with bubble wrap papers to avoid any damage while moving.
- All Wardrobe cabinets and drawers should be kept empty while moving as they are moved upside down while handling.
- Furniture Items, sofas, beds should be dismantled if possible before moving. As these are not designed to handle transport strain while travelling.
- Television Sets and Computer Peripherals wires can be disconnected and wrapped with bubble paper and kept into a cardboard box to avoid any sort of physical damage.
- When you are packing crockery, glassware and other fragile belongings wrap it with butcher paper in a cardboard box and provide it sufficient padding so they can sustain any sorts of a jerk.
- Scrawl names on all Cardboard boxes of whichever items they consist, so it can be easy to recognize while rearranging your belongings.
- Inquire about insurance services moving companies provide, while they are moving. Whether they cover fully or partially in case of any damage.
- While booking a moving service do enquire about temporary storing facility available in that particular region. How do the removalists charge you for those storage facilities and what services they cover? Is the storage facility is accessible 24/7.
- Do inquire whether moving company covers relocating of plant/gardening equipment. Some apartments have indoor plants or bonsai been prepared to suit those particular surroundings. These plants need to be carried with utmost care as they are placed in ceramic pots and soil in them, if the soil is spilt from pots then it can damage your other belongings too. If plants are relocated make sure that they have a similar environment to the previous place so they can adapt to the new environment easily.
- Do inquire whether your moving company covers pet moving service? If yes then what are the resources they have like special cages for pets and if at least one person is allowed to travel with the pets so they don’t panic during the transit process.
- Avoid carrying flammable items like cooking oils, Kerosene, Petrol during moving. Remove fuel or gas from lamps, LPG cylinders, and lawn equipment during packing. Also, Disconnect batteries from Appliance before moving.
